About This Vintage Postcard

This deckle edge postcard presents an aerial view of the 13-mile tangent of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Cumberland County, capturing the early days of America's first superhighway. The light-colored roadway cuts a precise line through a patchwork of green and brown fields, forested areas, and gently rolling hills. In the distance, a mountain range rises beyond the valley, adding depth to the scenic landscape. Vehicles can be spotted on the turnpike, highlighting its role as a vital transportation route.

Additional Information

Based on the physical markers of the card itself, this is a smooth-surface lithograph produced by the Dexter Press of Pearl River, NY. Unlike common textured cards of the period, this specimen utilizes the "Aquarelle Process," a high-quality lithographic method used by Dexter in the 1930s and early 1940s to produce vibrant, painterly colors. The production number 21315 and the specific Pearl River, N.Y. imprint confirm a publication date closely following the Pennsylvania Turnpike's October 1940 opening. The card was published for the Howard Johnson Restaurants by Sidney S. Koch of Altoona, PA, part of the early roadside distribution network for the new "Super Highway."

This vintage postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
