1955 Maltese Cross Convertible Pin Brooch Pendant by Howard Benedik
The Maltese cross was the most famous and iconic design by Howard Benedik. Located at 389 5th Avenue, one of the most fashionable streets of New York, the Benedikt jewelry company produced high-quality costume jewelry from 1955 to 1963. Collectors of vintage costume jewelry recognize Benedikt designs and quality rival Hattie Carnegie’s pieces.
This gold-plated brooch also comes with a pendant or hook, so it can be fastened to a ribbon choker, a "V" in a dress neckline, a gentleman's lapel, hat band, etc. Exquisite.
A cross, in general, has its origins in Christianity. The popularity of the Maltese Cross is credited to the Knights Hospitaller. More specifically, to the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller, Jean de la Vallette-Parisot (c.1494-1568 / Grand Master from 1557-1658). Under his leadership, coins were minted with the Maltese Cross symbol, hence the relation back to the nature of the cross as a Christian symbol.
Hospitallers, also spelled Hospitalers, also called Order of Malta or Knights of Malta, formally (since 1961) Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and Malta, previously (1113–1309) Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem, (1309–1522) Order of the Knights of Rhodes, (1530–1798) Sovereign and Military Order of the Knights of Malta, or (1834–1961) Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Jerusalem, a religious military order that was founded at Jerusalem in the 11th century and that, headquartered in Rome.
The Order continues its humanitarian tasks in most parts of the modern world under several slightly different names and jurisdictions.
This results in the Maltese Cross symbolizing piety, loyalty, generosity, bravery, glory, honor, contempt of death, and helpfulness towards the poor, sick, and needy. And other qualities of Knighthood at its best.;
Setting aside all this history for just a moment. Feast your eyes on this exquisite piece of jewelry and realize it is a thousand times more magnificent in person. Circa 1955. Signed: Benedikt NY.
