1951 vintage postcard. The history of Jungle Gardens began in the early 1930s when David Breed Lindsay, a local newspaperman, purchased a swampy banana grove with the vision of creating a botanical garden. With the help of his neighbor Pearson Conrad, who owned a nearby nursery, they transformed the land by importing thousands of tropical plants, trees, and flowers from around the world. By 1936, they began charging admission, and by 1940, Jungle Gardens had taken on its current form.

In the early 1970s, the gardens were sold to the philanthropic Allyn family, who continue to manage it today. The gardens are home to over 200 native and exotic animals, including the famous free-roaming flamingos, which are a favorite among visitors.
