Miles Rock Lighthouse near the Golden Gate, San Francisco, 1943. This dramatic postcard captures the lone lighthouse standing firm in the waters just off the Golden Gate, its white tower a beacon against the backdrop of distant mountains. In the foreground, waves crash against jagged rocks, a reminder of the perilous currents that once made this stretch of coastline infamous for shipwrecks.

Mile Rocks Lighthouse, completed in 1906 just months before the great earthquake, it was built after the tragic wreck of the City of Rio de Janeiro, a steamship that sank nearby, taking over 100 lives. Rising from the sea like a guardian, the lighthouse served for decades as a vital guide for vessels entering San Francisco Bay, its beam piercing through fog, wind, and war.

This photo was taken before the top of the lighthouse was removed to make way for a helicopter pad. This uncirculated postcard would look great framed, make a wonderful host or hostess gift, or make an excellent addition to any collection.
