1907 City Hall Soldiers Monument Providence Rhode Island

This 1907 vintage postcard captures the front façade of the City Hall in Providence, Rhode Island. The grand architecture, featuring a dome and ornate windows, is a testament to the Second Empire style designed by Samuel J. F. Thayer. In front of the City Hall stands the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, with bicycles leaning against its surrounding fence. Several people are seen crossing Exchange Place, which was later renamed Kennedy Plaza.

The postcard, with an undivided back (UDB), was sent as part of a collector’s exchange agreement by Mrs. J.W. Davis, possibly the wife of the 38th and 41st Governor of Rhode Island, John W. Davis.

Providence City Hall, built between 1875 and 1878, still stands today and remains a significant landmark in the city. This postcard offers a charming glimpse into the historical urban landscape and daily life of early 20th-century Providence.
