Richly worked and substantial Art Nouveau cabinet vase by Daum Frères, Nancy, dating to 1892. The influence of Japanese prints on the artist is clear, and it is from one of Daum's earliest collections.
Though square at the base, the vase’s tall vertical profile gives it a refined, rectangular silhouette. Crafted in thick, overlaid glass, this piece is solid and weighty, featuring finely acid-etched, engraved, and gilded decoration in colorless and amethyst-purple hues. Please read the entire description and see the photos for condition information.

Origin: Nancy, France
Size Classification: Small, Cabinet Size
Approximate Dimensions: 3 3/4 inches tall
Decoration: Art Nouveau

Condition: Significant fracture cracks deep within the glass that you cannot feel on the surface, a few chips, including the rear upper left corner, as shown in the images. The gilt is all but gone on the etched signature, which is difficult to see with the naked eye.
The violet motif, carved in relief and gently highlighted in gold, is set against a softly frosted background that gives depth to the glass. In the language of flowers, violets represent modesty, faithfulness in romantic love, and enduring devotion, sentiments perfectly in tune with the Art Nouveau movement’s embrace of nature and symbolism. A gilded base and collar frame the form, adding contrast and a warm metallic touch.
Daum Nancy with the Cross of Lorraine, though the gilded signature is now faint and difficult to detect with the naked eye due to wear. The vase stands approximately 3 3/4 inches tall and is classified as cabinet size.
Condition: There are several fracture cracks, a few small chips, and considerable loss to the gilt on the signature. Please review images carefully. Despite its condition, this is a boldly executed and emotionally resonant example of Daum’s early studio work, where craftsmanship, symbolism, and material presence meet.
