A finely carved Chinese Shoushan stone seal, dating to the spring of 1853 (Guiwei year) as inscribed directly on the piece, during the Xianfeng reign of the Qing dynasty (1850–1861). This refined scholar’s object features a rare and intricately carved three-dimensional dragon with pearl finial, skillfully rendered in the round. The dragon, a traditional symbol of strength, wisdom, and imperial authority, is depicted with remarkable movement and expressive detail, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.
Period: Qing Dynasty - 1853
Material: Natural Shoushan stone, prized for its fine texture and warm polish
Dimensions: 8 cm in height, 5 cm in width, and 3 cm in depth. Weight: 279.9 grams.
Seal face: Uncarved, suggesting the piece’s use as a scholar’s object or collector’s item
Condition: Surface wear consistent with age
Provenance: From a single-family collection of Chinese antiques, passed down through four generations.
The vertical front of the seal is inscribed in elegant Chinese calligraphy, including a poetic couplet we have had translated as:
“Subtle tones of the wind chime speak profound truths;
A soft whistle drifts among verdant peaks.”
The couplet reflects both the contemplative mindset of the Qing scholar and the natural scenery of Shoushan itself: a mountainous region in Fujian Province famed for its tranquil landscapes and exceptional carving stone. The reference to “green mountains” in the inscription could be a direct poetic nod to the lush, rolling hills surrounding the Shoushan quarries, where generations of artisans and scholars found both inspiration and material for their art.
The inscription explicitly dates the seal to the spring month of the Guiwei year (1853) during the Qing Xianfeng era, reflecting traditional literati themes of nature, serenity, and philosophical depth. The precise reference to the Qing Xianfeng era grounds the piece firmly in mid-19th-century China. The text reflects the contemplative spirit of literati culture, evoking a quiet reverence for nature and philosophical meaning.
This exceptional and substantial seal exemplifies the finest qualities of Qing dynasty scholars’ art and is a rare acquisition for discerning collectors of antique Chinese seals, Shoushan stone carvings, and classical literati artifacts.
