A rare and glamorous black evening blouse from the late 1930s to early 1940s, crafted from richly textured rayon pebble crepe. This piece embodies the elegance and drama of Old Hollywood glamour, with original metal Talon zippers at the back neck and left side, a rounded neckline, and short sleeves. Adjustable belting at each side seam to self-tie at the back. The silhouette is timeless, but it is the details that truly set it apart.

Modern size equivalent: Medium

Measurements are taken flat and doubled when appropriate.
Bust: 36"
Shoulders/across back: 18 1/2"
Waist, untied: 28"
Length: 25"
Sleeve length from upper shoulder seam to hem: 7"
Sleeve opening: 10"

Across the bodice, radiating tuckwork creates fan-shaped motifs on each side, narrowing at the waist and fanning outward toward the center. These fine, closely spaced rows of stitching add sculptural texture and visual interest, subtly shaping the form with a touch of vintage drama.

The front yoke is adorned with original gelatin sequins, prized in the 1920s and 30s for their rich, glowing shimmer. These electroplated gelatin sequins reflect light in a way that modern acetate cannot replicate.

Self-fabric tie straps at each side seam allow for adjustable waist definition, creating a flattering shape when tied at the back.

Care and condition: Gelatin sequins are heat sensitive. These electroplated gelatin sequins shimmer beautifully under ballroom lights but can wither if exposed to heat, water, rain, or steam. Despite their fragility, their depth of color is simply irresistible. After the 1930s, acetate sequins began to replace gelatin, making surviving pieces like this one increasingly rare. The front sequins are vibrant and intact. The back sequins were removed due to damage, leaving some light puckering that doesn’t detract from the piece's overall beauty. Both metal zippers function smoothly. Fabric is strong and wearable.

This is a piece of fashion history. Inspired by the sequin craze that followed the discovery of King Tut’s tomb, it captures a moment in time when glamour and innovation met. A true collector’s piece, perfect for the vintage lover, the performer, or the romantic dresser with a love for timeless sparkle.
