About This Vintage Postcard

Step onto the scenic heights of Oslo with this vibrant view of the Seamen's School (Sjømannsskolen) at Ekeberg. Completed in 1917, the school’s castle-like brick architecture is a landmark overlooking the Oslofjord. The scene captures the modern infrastructure of the era, featuring a blue Ekeberg Line tram climbing the steep hillside. To the right, the winding road offers a panoramic view of the harbor and distant islands. This site is famous not only for its maritime education history but also as the location that inspired the background of Edvard Munch’s "The Scream." This postcard serves as a beautiful record of the technological progress and architectural grandeur of the Norwegian capital during the early twentieth century.

Additional Information

The publisher imprint identifies this card as part of the N. J. U. series under number 139. The 25 øre red Posthorn stamp and the 1925 Oslo postmark date its use to the mid-1920s. The card carries significant historical interest as it was mailed from Norway to Mrs. T. A. Jaggar at the "Volcano House" in Hawaii Territory. Thomas Jaggar was a world-famous volcanologist and founder of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The extensive handwritten message from "C. B. Day" offers warm holiday and New Year greetings, mentioning: "I wish you and your hubby a peace full and glad Christmas... may the new year see you both in good health and with your hearts desires."
