1915 Maison des Étudiants Paris Hôtel Colbert France Vintage Postcard, TVC
About This Vintage Postcard
Step into the intellectual heart of the Latin Quarter with this evocative monochrome postcard of the Maison des Étudiants, located at the historic intersection of Rue de la Bûcherie and Rue de l'Hôtel-Colbert. The striking architectural centerpiece is the 18th-century anatomical rotunda, featuring a distinctive rounded dome that originally served as an amphitheater for the Faculty of Medicine between 1472 and 1775. This "Timbre Côté Vue" (TCV) scene perfectly captures the transition of this medieval site into a dedicated "student house" at the turn of the 20th century. The building's eclectic facade, with its soaring arched windows and classical stonework, stands as a testament to Paris's enduring legacy as a global center for education and medical science.

Additional Information
This card features a formal handwritten message in French dated May 29, 1915, from a Mr. Camagnac, located at 13-15 Rue de la Bûcherie, to Madame Marie Bernadou at 35 Rue de Passy, Paris. The sender mentions a "registre" (register) that remained "blotti dans le coin de la salle" (hidden in the corner of the room) and was now at her disposal. The building shown is the Hôtel de la Bûcherie, which served as the seat of the University of Paris Faculty of Medicine for over three centuries. The rotunda was inaugurated in 1745 and is known as the "Winslow Amphitheatre." This TCV card is a wonderful example of how the front-placed stamps and the formal wartime correspondence on the reverse create a unique historical record of life in the 5th Arrondissement during WWI.
