About This Vintage Postcard

The timeless tradition of the Canadian sugar bush is beautifully depicted in this early 20th-century scene from Blind River, Ontario. As the winter snow begins to melt, the image captures a team of draft horses pulling a sap sled through a dense grove of maple trees, a method used for generations to transport raw sap to the sugar shack. Men and women in heavy winter coats are shown tending to the traditional metal buckets hanging from the tapped trees, illustrating the labor-intensive process of harvesting the sweet liquid that would be boiled down into maple syrup and sugar. This hand-colored view captures the rugged charm and seasonal rhythm of rural life in Northern Ontario, where maple production remains a vital part of the cultural and agricultural heritage.

Additional Information

This postcard was produced by the Photogelatine Engraving Co. Limited (PECO) of Ottawa, a firm renowned for its high-quality "photogelatine" or collotype printing process which provides a fine, screenless texture. The manufacturing date is narrowed to circa 1925–1930 based on the PECO logo and the specific "WS-10" series numbering. While printed in the late 1920s, this card was mailed much later in 1947, carrying a 1-cent George Washington stamp from the Presidential Series. The card was sent to L. C. Batson in Birmingham, Alabama, from a traveler in Durham, New Hampshire. Blind River, situated on the North Channel of Lake Huron, was a bustling center for the timber industry during this era, and these "WS" (Winter Scene) cards were popular souvenirs highlighting the rugged northern lifestyle.

This postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
