1960 Azorín José Martínez Ruiz by Sorolla
This postcard shows a portrait of José Martínez Ruiz, better known by his pseudonym Azorín, painted in 1917 by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. Azorín was a leading Spanish writer and a prominent member of the Generation of ’98, a group of novelists, poets, and essayists who sought to renew Spanish literature and reflect on Spain’s identity during a time of national crisis following the Spanish-American War. His work is known for its careful attention to detail, focus on the Spanish landscape, and a distinctive, impressionistic prose style.
Sorolla, one of Spain’s most celebrated artists, captures Azorín in a formal, seated pose, conveying both the author’s thoughtful presence and the calm intensity of his literary persona. The Roman numerals MCMXVII are visible in the lower left corner of the painting, marking its completion in 1917.
This portrait is part of the collection of The Hispanic Society of America in New York City. Founded to preserve and share the art, literature, and history of Spain and Latin America, the Society allows the public to experience the richness of Spanish-speaking culture through works like this portrait.
This postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
