1967 Metropolitan Opera House New York City Vintage Postcard
Imagine standing before a luminous temple of glass and stone where the air vibrates with the memory of a thousand melodies. Five vast arches of pale travertine rise like gentle ribs cradling a golden heart. Between them walls of glass stretch toward the sky thin and delicate as a dragonfly’s wing. As evening falls a warm amber light spills from within, transforming the glass into glowing lanterns. Through it you catch the abstract shapes of murals splashed in crimson and gold dancing in the periphery.
Above the arches thousands of Austrian crystal chandeliers hang like constellations, catching the last rays of the day and reflecting them in a thousand tiny sparks. The plaza beneath is wide and steady guiding you toward the center of this hive of art. Every step feels monumental yet fragile as if the building itself breathes culture and anticipation.
Designed by Wallace K Harrison and opened in nineteen sixty six it is the largest repertory opera house in the world home to the Metropolitan Opera and a stage for the American Ballet Theatre. The murals by Marc Chagall visible through the glass capture the spirit of the very first season in this new home.
This vintage postcard would look great framed or make a great addition to any collection.
