Stretching across the waters of San Francisco Bay, this striking view captures the monumental San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge as seen from Yerba Buena Island. From this vantage point, the impressive steel towers of the bridge rise dramatically above the bay, while the skyline of San Francisco appears in the distance. The western span, linking Yerba Buena Island to San Francisco, dominates the foreground, illustrating the massive scale of this engineering achievement that transformed travel across the bay.

Completed in 1936, the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge quickly became one of the most recognizable landmarks in Northern California. At nearly eight miles long, it was among the longest bridges in the world at the time of its construction and remains a vital transportation route connecting San Francisco with Oakland and communities throughout the East Bay. The view from Yerba Buena Island highlights the dramatic suspension structure leading toward the city’s waterfront and business district.

The bridge deck shown in the image displays a configuration of five lanes of one-way traffic on the upper level. When the bridge first opened in 1936, it had a double-deck design with six lanes of automobile traffic on the upper deck (three in each direction) and trucks and interurban trains running on the lower deck. In 1963, the bridge was reconfigured to accommodate increasing automobile traffic, creating a one-way-per-deck system. The presence of this traffic arrangement in the photograph suggests the image dates from the early 1960s or slightly later.

This chrome era postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
