This step-in chemise, made by the renowned Van Raalte Company, is a marvelous example of vintage lingerie from the 1920s (1929). Crafted from luxurious rayon, the chemise features an Art Deco-inspired white-on-white striped run-resistant jersey knit fabric, adding a touch of elegance to its functional design.
Modern size equivalent: Small, with some stretch to make it cling, but not extremely so.
Actual measurements not stretched:
Bust 34 - 36"
Waist 24"
Hips 34"
Leg openings 36"
Condition and care: This chemise shows a few signs of age, including several darns, a few tiny stains on body, and a few small interior gusset stains. Please see the images.
Care instructions: For proper care, we recommend hand washing in warm water. Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring), then lay flat on a towel, rolling it up to absorb more water. Finally, lay the chemise flat on a clean line half-folded to air dry.
The piece proudly displays the Van Raalte label, a hallmark of high-quality craftsmanship. Made in the USA, it is designed with a left-side hook-and-eye placket, just before zippers became popular, and adjustable straps for a personalized, comfortable fit.
The Van Raalte Company, founded in 1907 by brothers Emanuel and Zealie Van Raalte in New York City, originally made its name by manufacturing veils at a time when all veils were imported from France and England. By 1920, the company had become the largest silk-veiling and net factory in the world. Expanding into silk jersey cloth, gloves, underwear, and hosiery, it operated 12 factories along the East Coast and sold its products in upscale department stores. Van Raalte became synonymous with luxury, known for its high-quality products and the slogan, “VAN RAALTE: Because You Love Nice Things.”
