Step into a dramatic moment in American history with this vintage postcard depicting the Jesse James Mural, located in the lobby of the Southern Deposit Bank in Russellville, Kentucky. The mural captures the chaos and tension of the 1868 robbery, believed to be the first bank heist carried out by the infamous Jesse James gang. Armed robbers flee with sacks of cash as citizens and bank employees scatter in fear, while horses wait to carry the gang to freedom. Painted with vivid color and dynamic composition, the artwork transports viewers to a pivotal event in the Old West, blending history and artistry in a striking visual narrative.

This postcard was published in 1958 by Royaltowne Studio of Russellville, Kentucky, and printed by Dexter Press, Inc., West Nyack, New York, as a genuine natural color reproduction. The mural itself was painted by Burnard Wiley of Madison, Tennessee, and is displayed in the bank that has been in continuous operation since 1839. The original building where the robbery occurred, at Sixth and Main Streets, still stands today.

This unused, uncirculated example preserves a colorful depiction of one of Kentucky’s most legendary historical events and a mid-century approach to commemorating local heritage through murals and postcards. This postcard would look great framed, make a wonderful hostess gift, or make an excellent addition to any collection.
