About This Vintage Postcard

This striking colorized lithograph captures the bustling energy of Drottningtorget (The Queen's Square) in Gothenburg, Sweden, during the early 20th century. Dominating the scene is the grand facade of Hôtel Eggers, one of Sweden's oldest and most prestigious hotels, which has occupied this prime location near the Central Station since 1859. The image features traditional horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians crossing the Drottningtorgsbron bridge, which spans the city's historic canal. This square has long served as a vital gateway to the city, bridging the gap between the historic fortifications and the modern railway hub.

Additional Information

The reverse of the card provides a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century life in both Sweden and the American Midwest. The printed description incorrectly identifies the location as "Drottning's Market," likely a translation error for Drottningtorget, and notes the city's fame for public squares like Gustavus Adolphus's Torg and Kungstorget. Mailed in July 1909 from Marysville, Kansas, to Miss Minnie Heuppelsheuser, the handwritten message from "Cousin Emma" mentions a delay in mail delivery: "You remember I promised you this, then the mail carrier didn't come for a few days." The card is franked with a classic 1c Benjamin Franklin definitive stamp.
