Step into the early days of Indiana statehood and imagine the hum of careful discussion and debate in a room where the foundations of government were first laid. Sunlight streams through tall, white-framed windows, illuminating the soft yellow walls and the polished dark wood of the floor. The space feels orderly and purposeful, a quiet witness to the state’s first legislative proceedings and the ambitions of its earliest representatives.

The chamber is framed by two large square white pillars, and a low dark wood railing runs across the foreground, separating the seating area from the central aisle. Rows of wooden Windsor-style chairs, their spindle backs polished and orderly, face a long, elevated white desk at the far wall, positioned directly beneath the central window. A simple gold-toned chandelier hangs from the ceiling, its small candle-like lights reflecting softly across the room. Dark oval-framed portraits and small gold wall sconces accent the walls, adding dignity and historical depth to the space.

Constructed between 1814 and 1816 in Federal style from local limestone and virgin timber, the Corydon Capitol served as Indiana’s first statehouse from 1816 to 1825. The House of Representatives chamber has been preserved to reflect its early 19th-century appearance, including period-appropriate furnishings and décor.

This vintage postcard, produced by W. M. Cline Co., Chattanooga, Tennessee, in natural color and photographed by Frank Shannon, beautifully captures the quiet elegance of the chamber and is a wonderful piece for framing or adding to a historic postcard collection.

This would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
