1904 Bremen Ratskeller Germany Vintage Postcard, UDB
About This Vintage Postcard
Step into the atmospheric depths of the Bremen Ratskeller, the world famous wine cellar located beneath the city Town Hall. Established in 1405 this site is one of the oldest wine cellars in Germany and part of a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The scene features soaring vaulted ceilings and a monumental ornately carved wine cask that represents centuries of Hanseatic wine trade. Originally a place where the city council held an exclusive monopoly on wine sales it evolved into a storied tavern hosting figures like Kaiser Wilhelm II and Johannes Brahms. This view captures the timeless blend of civic history and social tradition that has defined the cellar for over six hundred years.

Additional Information
The publisher imprint identifies the firm as Alb. Rosenthal located in Bremen. This card features an undivided back which was the required format in Germany until the early twentieth century. The manufacture date is precisely narrowed by the September 1904 hand cancellations. The card was mailed to a Mr. Tho. Benz in Reading Pennsylvania. This international correspondence used the 10 pfennig rate for postcards sent via the Universal Postal Union. The message on the front is also dated Sept. 3 1904. The Bremen Ratskeller famously houses the oldest cask wine in Germany which is a Rüdesheim vintage from 1653. The giant casks shown could historically hold tens of thousands of bottles and remain a primary attraction for visitors today.
