This vintage mid-century airline catering cutlery set is a genuine piece of South African Airways history, one of the world’s oldest airlines boasting an illustrious history spanning 90 years.
This set includes three pieces of SAA in-flight stainless steel cutlery. The tablespoon was used for soups or main dishes, the teaspoon for desserts or stirring beverages, and the fork for main courses or accompaniments. Each piece reflects the elegance and attention to detail of the 1960s First Class Springbok Service.
The handles feature the Springbok logo, connecting the set directly to SAA in the 1960s, when the airline introduced the Boeing 707 and the celebrated Springbok Service. In-flight dining was a refined experience, with meals served on crisp linen with stainless-steel cutlery.
Maker's marks: Two pieces are stamped “18/8 non-magnetic stainless,” a premium alloy of 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel, chosen for strength, corrosion resistance, and long-lasting polish. One piece is marked “Krusius Solingen,”. Krusius was a German steelware manufacturer founded in 1886 in Solingen, a city famous for its cutlery production.
Condition: One fork, two spoons, in as-found condition, as shown in images.
This set combines technical quality with the romance of air travel’s golden age, ideal for aviation collectors or lovers of mid-century design.
