1960s La Casa Grande Hearst Castle California Vintage Postcard
Rising high above the Pacific along California’s dramatic coastline, La Casa Grande crowns the Enchanted Hill with towers, gardens, and cathedral-like grandeur. This vintage postcard captures the commanding presence of the main residence at Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument, where twin Spanish Renaissance towers frame a façade reminiscent of great European cathedrals. Visible from Coast Highway 1 and even from ships at sea, the hilltop estate stands as one of the most extraordinary architectural visions in America.
Conceived by publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst and brought to life by pioneering architect Julia Morgan, construction began in 1919 and continued for nearly three decades. Formally known as La Cuesta Encantada, the estate encompasses 165 rooms and showcases an immense collection of European art and antiquities. The iron grille at the grand entrance once adorned a 16th-century Spanish convent, while alabaster light casings line the pathways, adding a soft glow to the gardens below the soaring bell towers that house 36 carillon bells.
Designated a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark, the estate remains a crown jewel of the Central Coast near San Simeon. This postcard, distributed by James W. Cook of Cambria and produced as a Plastichrome colourpicture in Boston, preserves the estate’s sunlit splendor and architectural drama in vivid mid-century color.
With its sweeping towers and storied past, this postcard would display beautifully framed or make a distinguished addition to any Hearst Castle, California landmark, or vintage travel postcard collection.
