1960s Amphibious Duck Squeezes Through Red Bird Gorge, Wisconsin Dells
Feel the thrill of adventure with this vintage postcard capturing a “tight squeeze” through Red Bird Gorge on the Original Wisconsin Ducks tour in Wisconsin Dells. The image freezes an exciting moment as an amphibious Duck boat carefully navigates between towering Cambrian sandstone cliffs, their rugged walls rising dramatically on either side. The narrow passage highlights both the skill of the driver and the breathtaking geology that has made the Dells a beloved destination for generations.
These distinctive Ducks, originally designed as World War II amphibious vehicles, found new life carrying sightseers across land and water in the Wisconsin Dells beginning in the mid-20th century. The one-hour tour promised fun and adventure from 8 A.M. to 7 P.M., inviting visitors to bring their cameras and experience the region’s winding canyons, sculpted by glacial forces thousands of years ago. Red Bird Gorge remains one of the most memorable highlights of the excursion, where nature and nostalgia meet in dramatic fashion.
Photographed by John A. Trumble and published by Trumble Photography of Wisconsin Dells, this postcard preserves a lively chapter of the area’s tourism history. It would make a dynamic addition to any collection of vintage Wisconsin Dells memorabilia, mid-century travel postcards, or classic roadside attraction souvenirs, and would display beautifully as a reminder of summer fun and scenic adventure.
