1960s Amphibious Duck Crossing Sand Bar, Wisconsin Dells

The vehicle pictured is an authentic GMC DUKW-353, originally built for World War II beach landings and troop transport. Beginning in 1946, surplus DUKWs were repurposed for tourism in Wisconsin Dells, forming the Original Wisconsin Ducks fleet. Many Ducks were given names honoring famous WWII battles or campaigns, linking passengers to the vehicles’ military heritage while providing a thrilling sightseeing adventure.
The Wisconsin Dells region has a history stretching back thousands of years. The Ho-Chunk people were the original inhabitants, leaving behind mounds and artifacts along the river. French explorers arrived in the seventeenth century, and by the nineteenth century the area became a popular tourist destination. Steamboats first brought visitors to view the sandstone cliffs and gorges, and later guided riverboats and amphibious Ducks offered new ways to explore the region’s dramatic landscapes.
