1930s Llyn Ogwen Snowdonia Highland Cattle Wales Vintage Postcard, RPPC
About This Vintage Postcard
Experience the rugged isolation of North Wales with this atmospheric colorized postcard of Llyn Ogwen. Located at the head of the Nant Ffrancon Valley, this ribbon lake is cradled by the formidable peaks of the Glyderau and Carneddau ranges. The scene features a small group of Highland cattle at the water's edge, a quintessential subject for the romantic landscape art of the period. Legend has it that the lake is the final resting place of Excalibur, the sword of King Arthur, thrown into the waters after the Battle of Camlann. This view illustrates the wild, untouched beauty that made the Ogwen Valley a premier destination for Victorian-era hikers and artists seeking the sublime in the Welsh wilderness.

Additional Information
The artwork for this card is signed by Elmer Keene (1853β1929), a prolific British artist renowned for his soft, atmospheric landscapes. Although manufactured during the early Golden Age, this specific card was mailed decades later. Sent on May 24, 1938, from Manchester to Sister Grey at St. Andrews on Billing Road in Northampton, the sender writes: "I hope you are very well. The time is getting very short now. I am in Manchester just now with Mrs. Marsden. The weather is not bad here. Kind regards, D. Marsden." The card is part of a series identified by the number "198" and is specifically labeled on the reverse as a "Hand-Coloured Real Photograph," a high-end production method where a monochrome collotype print was tinted by hand to enhance its romantic appeal.
