About This Vintage Postcard

Step into a serene corner of the Lower Garden District with this vibrant linen-era postcard featuring Margaret Square and its historic statue. Dedicated in 1884, the monument honors Margaret Haughery, the beloved benefactor of the city's orphans. Margaret was instrumental in building the New Orleans Orphan Asylum, St. Vincent's Infant Asylum, and St. Elizabeth's Home for Girls. This monument was notably the first public statue of a woman erected in the United States. The image captures the white marble statue set against a historic residence and framed by lush palms and flowering gardens, preserving the peaceful atmosphere of this unique New Orleans memorial during the peak of mid-century travel.
