About This Vintage Postcard

This linen-era postcard depicts the "Bump Gate" located on the grounds of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Little White House in Warm Springs, Georgia. This unique gate was built under the President's direction to be opened by the pressure of an automobile bumper. As the gate swings open on an eccentric pivot, the car passes through, and then the gate swings shut by gravity. This design allowed the President to drive through the grounds without needing to exit his vehicle. The scene captures the rustic, wooded charm of the Pine Mountain retreat, rendered with the saturated color and textured finish characteristic of mid-century lithographic printing.
