About This Vintage Postcard

Immerse yourself in the grand civic history of Paris with this evocative view of the Cour du Carrousel and the Monument to Léon Gambetta. Housed in the monumental courtyard of the Louvre, this massive sculptural group was inaugurated in 1888 to honor the statesman who was a hero of the Franco-Prussian War and a founder of the Third Republic.

The scene captures the ornate, towering monument topped by a winged figure, set against the backdrop of the Louvre's Pavillon de Flore. This landmark was a central fixture of the Parisian landscape for over half a century until it was tragically dismantled and melted down during the German occupation in 1941. This postcard serves as a vital archival record of the monument's original scale and the elegant urban gardens that once surrounded it.

Additional Information

The publisher imprint identifies the firm as Abeille, based in Paris, as part of their series number 53. The card carries significant historical weight through its extensive handwritten French message from the Great War era.

The sender writes (translated): "I am very happy that your health is better. I hope that the peace [treaty] will be signed as soon as possible so that your son can return to you, because all those poor soldiers who have been at the front have a great need for physical and moral rest. You tell me that you were very lonely when your son left. That that day was very sad for everyone at our home; my little brother had much sorrow leaving us and he hasn't had the happiness of seeing us again"

This poignant letter transforms the postcard into a unique witness to the emotional toll of WWI on French families.
