1940 WWII Marines City Hall Milwaukee WI Postcard

This 1940s vintage postcard features a striking view of Milwaukee City Hall, with the iconic World War II "Enlist in the US Famous Marines" recruitment slogan prominently displayed on its front. Built in 1895 during the height of the Progressive Era, City Hall was once the tallest building in Milwaukee, standing as a symbol of civic pride and virtue for nearly 80 years.

In front of the City Hall is a statue of Henry Bergh, founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). The statue, unveiled on April 29, 1891, stands at the center of a fountain. Originally placed atop a horse watering trough in Market Square, it was moved in 1941 to the Wisconsin Humane Society after the trough was converted into a flower bed.

Next to City Hall is the historic Jung Building, with the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company building visible in the distance.
