This vintage postcard captures a remarkable elm tree, famously bent by Native Americans to serve as a guiding landmark along forest trails. Its unusual, twisted form was not a random quirk of nature; it was intentionally broken and shaped while still a young sapling, then left to continue growing into a permanent living signpost.

Often called a trail tree, thong tree, or culturally modified tree, this elm represents a sophisticated system of navigation used long before maps or highways. These shaped trees pointed toward water sources, river crossings, hunting grounds, encampments, or sacred sites. Many of today’s roads are believed to follow paths first established by Indigenous travelers, tracing routes laid down generations before pioneers imagined there would be an Ohio.

Located just off Route 23 near Upper Sandusky, the tree once marked the trail leading to Crane Town, remembered as the last Native American settlement in Ohio. Of the few such markers that survived into modern times, this example was long regarded as one of the finest.

Beyond its powerful image and history, the postcard itself reflects a slice of mid-20th-century Americana. Issued as part of the “Let’s Explore Ohio” scenic series and distributed free at Standard Oil (SOHIO) service stations, it was meant to inspire travel and appreciation for local heritage.

Printed in vivid Kodachrome by R. R. McCreary on chrome stock, with a one-cent stamp instruction on the back, this card beautifully blends Native American history, roadside nostalgia, and classic promotional ephemera into one compelling piece. This would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
