1969 Sunshine of Brighton Seal, Brighton Aquarium

Bring home a piece of British seaside history with this 1969 postcard featuring “Sunshine,” a baby seal rescued from the beach in Brighton, a coastal city on the south coast of England in East Sussex. In January 1969, Sunshine was found severely ill and believed to have been shot.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (R.S.P.C.A.), a UK-based charity dedicated to rescuing and protecting animals, helped ensure she received care at Brighton Aquarium. The staff nursed her back to health, and she eventually lived happily with her companion, “Yogi,” becoming a local symbol of compassion and second chances.

Printed by Photo Precision Limited, St. Ives, Huntingdon, and marked “Post Office Preferred”  this postcard captures Sunshine in rich natural color. The seal, most commonly identified as a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina), displays the rounded head, expressive eyes, and spotted coat that make these “true” or earless seals so beloved.
