The Painter Thaulow and His Children postcard.
This vintage postcard reproduces Jacques-Émile Blanche’s 1895 oil on canvas Le Peintre Thaulow et ses enfants, depicting the Norwegian landscape painter Frits Thaulow surrounded by his family. On this postcard, the back lists the work as being from the N. Luxembourg Museum, reflecting its earlier exhibition history before entering the Musée d’Orsay collection.
Thaulow is shown at work, with his daughter Else from his first marriage and two children from his second marriage, Harald and Ingrid, nearby. His wife, Alexandra Lasson, stands behind him, completing the family portrait. Blanche’s Post-Impressionist style combines spontaneous brushwork with a carefully structured “spiral” composition that begins at the painter’s palette, drawing the viewer into the scene. Blanche later said this painting truly “made him a painter.”
The original measures 130 cm by 162 cm and is celebrated for its intimate portrayal of family life and artistic devotion. This postcard is a lovely collectible for admirers of European art, Post-Impressionist painting, and vintage museum reproductions.
