Disputed Ownership is a striking scene full of tension and dark humor. A cowboy on horseback throws a lasso toward a massive bear standing upright over the body of a downed mule. Another rider watches from a distance, while a small bear cub lingers off to the side. The sparsely detailed landscape keeps the focus squarely on the unusual confrontation. It’s a bold moment captured with dry wit, a hallmark of Art Brown’s storytelling style.

This is a 1959 reproduction of an original etching by Montana cowboy artist Art Brown. Born in 1911, Brown grew up on a cattle ranch near Great Falls and taught himself to draw through years of constant practice. He sketched what he saw and lived, trading or giving away much of his work. Although he lived much of his life in hardship, his art has been compared to that of Charles Russell for its honest and often humorous depictions of frontier life. Disputed Ownership is a perfect example of Brown’s ability to capture both the danger and absurdity of the Old West.

This postcard would look great framed, make a wonderful host or hostess gift, or make an excellent addition to any collection.
