Step back to the early 1930s with this vintage postcard depicting the George Washington Bridge spanning the Hudson River, connecting Upper Manhattan to Fort Lee, New Jersey. Captured shortly after its completion in 1931, the bridge appears in its original single-deck configuration, showcasing the steel suspension design engineered by Othmar H. Ammann with consulting architect Cass Gilbert. The photograph highlights the record-breaking 3,500-foot main span, which made it the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time.

In the left foreground, the postcard shows part of Paterno Castle, the estate of Dr. Charles V. Paterno, once perched on the cliffs of Washington Heights. Horse-drawn carriages and early automobiles may be glimpsed on Riverside Drive below, providing historical context to the cityscape of the era. This black-and-white postcard reflects the style popular in the early 1930s before the bright, saturated colors of the Linen Era fully emerged.

Published by the Manhattan Post Card Publishing Co., Inc., this postcard preserves a remarkable moment in engineering history, celebrating one of the 20th century’s most significant feats of civil engineering. This postcard would look great framed or make a great addition to any collection.
