Set of five vintage fish eye opaque white celluloid buttons. These buttons were originally used to fasten the waistbands of bloomers and petticoats.

Era: 1920s-1930s
Quantity: 5
Size: small
Measure approximately: 22L, 22 lignes, 13.9 mm, 35/64" (close to 1/2")
Attachment: Two-hole.

Color: Opaque white

Material: Celluloid, considered the first widely used plastic, was introduced commercially around 1880. It became especially popular for buttons, jewelry, and decorative items from the 1920s through the 1940s. Because celluloid is highly flammable, its use declined after the 1950s in favor of safer, modern plastics.

Origin: United States - major celluloid production in places like New Jersey or Connecticut.

Uses: these were commonly used to fasten the waistbands (drawstrings or closures) of bloomers, petticoats, step-ins, or other early 20th-century women's undergarments. The fish eye recesses helped secure thread against pulling/wear from frequent use/laundering. Similar buttons appear in vintage sewing catalogs and collector notes tied to lingerie/undergarment applications from the 1920s–1930s.

Condition: Excellent.
