1908 Randolph Mansion Fairmount Park Philadelphia PA Postcard
About This Vintage Postcard
The stately elegance of Philadelphia's colonial past is beautifully captured in this early 20th-century view of the Randolph Mansion, now known as Laurel Hill Mansion. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Schuylkill River in East Fairmount Park, this historic villa was built around 1767 for Francis and Rebecca Rawle. The architecture is a superb example of the Georgian style, later expanded with distinctive octagonal wings that add to its unique character. During the Revolutionary War, the prominent Loyalist Joseph Galloway occupied the house before it was eventually purchased by Dr. Philip Syng Physick, the "Father of American Surgery," for his daughter Sarah Randolph. This postcard provides a serene glimpse of the mansion as it appeared over a century ago, nestled within the expansive greenery of one of the world's largest urban park systems.
