About This Vintage Postcard

This atmospheric nighttime scene showcases the Girard Avenue Bridge spanning the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, uniquely bordered by a trompe l'oeil rustic wood-frame design. The bridge depicted is the 1874 iron-truss structure, which at the time of its construction was celebrated as the widest bridge in the world, built specifically to accommodate the massive influx of visitors to the 1876 Centennial Exposition. In the background, the glow of city lights and a passing red trolley reflect off the dark waters, capturing the industrial and civic pride of early 20th-century Philadelphia. This bridge served as a vital link between East and West Fairmount Park until it was replaced in the early 1970s.

Additional Information

The manufacturing date for this card is narrowed to 1907–1912. The presence of the Eagle and Shield logo identifies this as a product of the American Post Card Co., a prolific publisher during the Golden Age of postcards. The stamp box, indicating "1 Cent" for domestic and "2 Cents" for foreign postage, aligns with U.S. postal rates established between 1907 and 1917, while the lithographic style and "wood frame" border novelty are hallmarks of the pre-1913 period.

This vintage postcard would look great framed or make an excellent addition to any collection.
