About This Vintage Postcard

Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of France’s first "garden city" with this evocative view of the Grand Lac in Le Vésinet. Also known as the Lac des Ibis, this picturesque setting was a centerpiece of the landscape designed by the Count de Choulot. The scene captures the calm, reflective waters of the lake, featuring the pavilion of the "Cercle des Patineurs" (Skating Club) and a charming arched footbridge. Established in 1879, the club was a social hub for the Parisian elite who flocked to this stylish suburb for winter skating and summer strolls. The soft pink hues of the sunset and the silhouettes of the surrounding poplars perfectly illustrate the peaceful, romantic atmosphere that has defined Le Vésinet for over a century. The image card itself was originally printed in the late 1900s, but sat unused until the sender stamped and dropped it in a mailbox nearly two decades later in 1928.

Additional Information

The publisher imprint identifies the firm as "Phototypie l'Abeille" based in Paris, marked with the iconic S.A.C. monogram on the front. This card is part of their series documented under number 58. The 40c blue Sower stamp and the November 1921 hand-cancellation from the "Banlieue" (Paris Suburbs) precisely date its use to the post-WWI era. The card is addressed to a Mademoiselle Bernadou on Avenue de Wagram in Paris. The lengthy handwritten French message conveys warm personal sentiments: "Chère Mademoiselle, tous mes regrets pour hier soir... j'espère avoir cette semaine la faveur de vous voir..." (Dear Mademoiselle, all my regrets for yesterday evening... I hope to have the favor of seeing you this week...).
