About This Vintage Postcard

Immerse yourself in the royal history of Greater London with this artist-signed postcard of Bushey Park. The scene features the iconic Diana Fountain, a seventeenth-century masterpiece designed by Hubert Le Sueur for King Charles I. The bronze statue of the goddess stands atop a towering, ornate stone pedestal in the center of a large circular basin. Captured during the golden hour, the image shows Edwardian-era visitors strolling the lush grounds, including a gentleman in a top hat and a lady with a parasol. This park, once the hunting grounds for King Henry VIII, remains famous for its wide avenues of chestnut trees and roaming herds of wild deer. This postcard serves as a beautiful record of the peaceful, majestic atmosphere of the Royal Park at the turn of the century.

Additional Information

The publisher imprint identifies the firm as Misch & Stock, based in London, as part of their "Nature-Miniatures" series (No. 170). The artwork is signed by the British landscape artist Stephen Bowers, known for his atmospheric watercolors of English parklands. The half-penny King Edward VII stamp and the April 9, 1906, hand-cancellation from Wood Green precisely date its use. The card features a divided back, which was officially adopted in the UK in 1902; however, the reverse side still carries the transitional notice that the address side is "For Inland Use Only." The handwritten message from "H. H." to Miss C. Stone in Somerset offers birthday greetings: "Wishing you many happy returns of the day with love."
