About This Vintage Postcard

This postcard highlights a trio of historic engineering marvels crossing the Canal de la Marne au Rhin in the Saint-Mansuy district of Toul, France. The central focus is an elegant, high-arched pedestrian footbridge constructed in 1887, featuring an intricate lattice guardrail. This graceful iron structure allowed residents to cross the busy waterway while maintaining clearance for boat traffic. Just beneath it, a functional swing bridge and a railway bridge are also visible, showcasing the dense layering of 19th-century transportation infrastructure in this historic canal town.

Additional Information

The footbridge featured on this card was a landmark of the Saint-Mansuy neighborhood for decades. Built in 1887 to facilitate pedestrian movement over the canal, the bridge was eventually demolished in 1931. This specific view, numbered s-964 in the Environs de Toul Illustre series, is a rare photographic record of the bridge before its removal. Bridge enthusiasts will appreciate the juxtaposition of the lightweight arched pedestrian design with the functional swing and rail bridges nearby. The reverse side contains a brief pencil inscription in English that reads, "Toul nice place."
