This 1910 postcard features “Chaste Susannah at Her Bath,” a stunning work by the acclaimed French painter Jean-Jacques Henner. Born in 1829 in Bernwiller, Alsace, Henner was a master of the Academic Classical style, known for his use of sfumato and chiaroscuro. He studied under Michel Martin Drolling and François-Édouard Picot before entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Henner’s talent was recognized early on when he won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1858.

“Chaste Susannah at Her Bath” is a beautiful example of Henner’s skill in depicting the human form with grace and sensitivity. The painting portrays the biblical story of Susannah, capturing her in a moment of serene contemplation. Henner’s use of light and shadow, combined with his delicate brushwork, brings a sense of realism and depth to the scene. This piece is part of a long tradition of artists exploring the theme of Susannah, but Henner’s interpretation stands out for its elegance and subtlety.

Produced by the Musée du Luxembourg, this postcard is a wonderful way to own a piece of art history. It not only showcases Henner’s exceptional talent but also serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage preserved by the museum.
