The artist Albrecht Dürer, known for his portraits in drawing and painting, created few printed portraits, depicting friends, influential figures in various fields, and key figures of the Reformation. Frederick the Wise, Elector of Saxony, an early patron of Dürer, was the subject of a print made a year before his death, based on a silverpoint drawing by Dürer.

The intimate print showcases Dürer's engraving mastery, capturing the Elector's features and intricate details. The portrait includes symbols of Saxony's coat of arms and a Latin inscription praising Frederick's piety. Frederick, who protected Martin Luther after his excommunication, is remembered for safeguarding him in Wartburg Castle.
