1906. Gaiety Girl Maudi Darrell in a romanticized fantasy image. Founded in the 1890s, Gaiety Girls were respectable, elegant young ladies, unlike the actresses from London's earlier musical burlesques. Maudi Darrell appeared in popular musicals and comedies. She was a popular "postcard actress", with portraits of her sold in postcard format, as seen here. She had a valuable collection of diamonds, and the "Maharaja of Kuch Behar" (Sir Nripendra Narayan) presented Miss Darrell with "the finest emerald in England", in admiration for her beauty.

This antique silver bromide real photo is marked J. W. Berlin, who specialized in stage, opera, and silent film star portrait cards. The company was located at 14 Kirschenstr (Church Street) Charlottenburg, Berlin, Germany. Its location was near many theatrical and entertainment establishments, so many of its clients were stage and silent film stars. This would look great framed or make a nice addition to any collection.
