Produced between 1910 and 1914. "Canard dans les Roseaux" (Duck in the Reeds), A gorgeous antique zoomorphic Majolica slip pitcher by the Onnaing Pottery in Onnaing, France. In quality Victorian and Edwardian Majolica, there is a crispness of rendering and detailed attention paid to capturing the 'truth' of the appearance of the subject, as seen here.

La Faïencerie d’Onnaing in northern France was controlled by the Mouzin family in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Naturalistic "Duck in Reeds" shows the influence of Darwinism, natural history, and the rise of Naturalism in design and pottery during the period.

This handsome Victorian fellow stands approximately 9 1/2 tall. Firing cracks from his time cooling off from the kiln can be seen atop his head. Crazing throughout, as shown. No chips or repairs. Marked with an impressed shield surmounted by a crown and the word "Frie" to the left and "Onnaing" to the right. "MADE IN FRANCE" is below, indicating this was made for the export market. Majolica from this period is lead-glazed earthenware is suitable for decorative use only. It is not considered safe for food or drink ingestion due to the lead in the glaze. We combine shipping and invite you to visit our other listings.
