1910. A beautiful still life of a celebratory compote filled with sweetmeats. Historically sweets and confections were hand-made luxuries reserved for royalty and the aristocratic class. During the Victorian era, sugar was imported from the West Indies and became much more affordable. Sweetmeats, a variety of sweet pastries, became popular treats to serve at celebrations. A Victorian birthday cake, of sorts. A "Happy Birthday" greeting. This would look great framed or make a nice addition to any collection.
