1920s. Set of four knives with ivorine handles and stainless steel blades. Inscribed on blade: Echo George Hides & Son, Sheffield, Firth, Stainless. Measures approximately 9 1/4 inches in length. French Ivory' or 'Ivorine,' is faux-ivory celluloid.
Widely used as an alternative to the costly genuine article, the drawback of the handles included the fact that celluloid is highly flammable and deteriorates over time. Collectors treasure pieces like these that are in excellent condition. When not in use, store away from direct sunlight, in an airy, unsealed container.
